Types of Borders in Photoshop
You can make two kinds of borders using Photoshop CC to frame your images. While two options may not sound like a lot but they are all you require for creating the border you’ve always imagined to finish your photo.
Solid borders are defined as borders that have straight lines that wrap along the sides of your photograph. Imagine a photograph that has been framed by mat. In Photoshop, it is possible to create the appearance of a solid border around the image as if it were placed on a mat. A white or black border will give this look.
You can alter each part of the solid border with Photoshop and can alter the width, color as well as fill patterns. While it’s called”solid border,” you can fill it with a pattern or gradient “solid border,” you can fill in a solid border using patterns or gradients instead of an uncolored color.
Easiest Ways to Add a Border in Photoshop

Creating a Solid Border
The easiest border to design is an unbreakable frame. To make an attractive border, open your image within Photoshop.
In the tutorial, I’ll work on a photo that has not been edited:
If you’re adding a border to a photo you’ve edited that has multiple layers, make sure you smooth out the layers first.
To flatten layers to flatten layers in Photoshop CS or CC, select all active layers within the Layers panel located at the bottom of the right edge of your workspace. After that, right-click and select flatten Image in the menu.
Your workspace will look something like this:
After that, go to Then, navigate to the layer panel Once more. Locate the layer with your image. Hit the padlock symbol once in order to open the layer.
The name of the layer will change when you click the padlock. Your photo will now be included within “Layer 0.” Feel free to name the layer however you’d prefer.
In the next step, you’ll need to expand the canvas until there’s enough space for an edge. Select Image > Canvas Size at the top of the Photoshop toolbar.
In the dialog box that appears, be sure to select Relative. Next, type in the your desired border’s width. In this instance, I’ve selected to draw 2 inches of border around my image.
In this dialog box, you are able to select the color of your border. Find it by clicking on the Canvas extensions color at the bottom of the box and choose the color you’d like to use. I’ve opted to go with a simple design, using a simple white border.
Once you’ve completed these steps, your image will now have an edge! You can alter the size for your borders by altering the size of the canvas.
Creating a Custom Border in Photoshop
If the plain border isn’t your style, don’t be afraid! The Photoshop CS’s brush tool makes it easy to design an individual border.
Open your image within Photoshop:

In the next step, I’ll make the Layer mask for this image. A layer mask allows us to hide and show areas of the image and without altering it in any way.
To create a mask, select the Adjustment Layer icon in the lower right corner of the Panels. Select Solid Color from the choices that pop up.
